WAYS TO STORE THINGS

Living in a metropolitan city like New York means having limited space. Most people living in New York live in rented apartments, yet we lead such diverse, unique, and busy lives. As a result, we're constantly looking for ways to save space, and store things in an unobtrusive, aesthetically pleasing way. In the existing market, the more versatile and aesthetically desirable options were incredibly expensive, so I looked towards more functional forms like wire racks and pegboards for inspiration. A pegboard's inherent utilitarian nature makes it a flexible storage means that different users can adapt to their various needs. For my own, I tailored it to my own needs as a design student living in a studio apartment.

IDEATION TO DEVELOPMENT

I began with ideating around form primarily because the functionality of pegs are fairly fixed. From there, I realized that the size of the board would be dependent on the dimensions of the user’s space, so I focused more on the attachments. Also, since this project was partly a personal project, I included a shallow box at the base of the board for material storage like wood, foam core, paper, chipboard etc.

CONSTRUCTION PROCESS

I drilled the holes by hand, as I did not have access to a CNC machine.

I used a jig to ensure straight line of routes due to the length and angle of the board.

I used biscuit joints to construct the box and to attach it to the board.
