Brief: Design an ergonomic chair
The Lounger is a simple, comfortable lounge chair designed for a modern home.

SITTING IN CHAIRS

A simple, ergonomic lounge chair is a necessity for a living room. For this project we were given a large amount of creative freedom in terms of materials, aesthetic considerations, and size. For research, I sat in some successful lounge chairs across the more renowned furniture showrooms across SoHo and found that the combination of the depth of the chair and the angle of the headrest was the determining factor.

IDEATION TO DEVELOPMENT

I started ideating mainly around form, based on what I found in my research. I started with organic, soft forms, but after considering the properties of wood as a material, I moved towards more geometric and angular forms. Eventually I refined it into a design that used a triangular motif for stability and kept the comfortable dimensions I discovered in my research.

CONSTRUCTION PROCESS

I used Fusion 360 to refine the angles and joints of the chair. It helped me create a cut list for my wood, and clarify the production process. I also used it to refine my CMF choices, and get a better idea of the chair’s spatial presence.

I modeled my chair in a variety of materials to further my understanding of the production process and spatial aspects like proportion and dimension.

The glue up of the legs and seats was difficult because of the angles involved. The obtuse angle of the seat was challenging to clamp and simultaneous glue ups of multiple key joints also proved to be challenging.

It being my first time attempting upholstery, I found picking the appropriate fabric and upholstery foam difficult, however the final result was comfortable.
